"Our students continue to learn well beyond the time limits of the school day and year. Supporting and encouraging them to reach their full academic potential requires us to consider additional avenues for providing instructional opportunities. High quality after-school, before-school, and summer school programs will help us achieve the goal of having all children graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary for postsecondary success in college and careers." --Tony Evers, PhD, State Superintendent

In its commitment to ensuring academic achievement for all students, the Sparta Area School District operates four 21st Century Community Learning Center (CLC) programs. Housed at Southside Elementary, Lawrence-Lawson Elementary, Maplewood Elementary and Meadowview Schools, CLCs help students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offer students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offer literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin's 205 Community Learning Centers served 39,794 students during the 2012-13 school year. Of these, 20,932,657 were regular attendees, participating in activities 30 or more days during the reporting period. Of the regular attendees, 76.8 percent were economically disadvantaged; 61.3 percent were students of color; and 15.5 percent were English Language Learners. Approximately 225 students participate daily in the Sparta Area School District's four CLCs. At Meadowview Intermediate School, 69 percent of students are considered regular attendees.

The CLCs at Lawrence-Lawson, Maplewood and Meadowview are are federally funded through grant dollars administered by the state Department of Public Instruction. Southside and Maplewood receive funding through the Sparta Area School District.
