Who we Help
The children we help come from families who are experiencing significant economic hardship. Some of these families receive some assistance through a federally funded National School Lunch program. However, even this assistance is not always enough. Our community has over 1,450 children who remain in need of additional financial assistance for school meals.
History of the Lunch Fund
The Sparta Area School District Nutrition Program established a "Lunch Fund" in January 2009 to better meet the nutritional needs of children. Since 2009, we have helped 420 families in need with funds for school meals.
John Harrison's Story
In March 2019, Sparta community member John Harrison began his mission to ensure no child would go hungry in the Sparta Area School District. He decided to stand at the corner of Wisconsin and Black River Street every Saturday morning to solicit donations for the Angel Lunch Fund. Through generous contributions from those passing by, John was able to donate approximately $3,000 to the fund before his unexpected passing in June of 2019. John's personal goal was $10,000. John's family is continuing his work so that no child goes hungry. The Sparta Area School District has renamed the "Lunch Fund" to the "John Harrison Memorial Angel Lunch Fund".
