Welcome Military Families!

The Sparta Area School District is a rural school district and is also proud to be the home of Fort McCoy, the only U.S. Army installation in Wisconsin. The Sparta Area School Districts has the high honor of doing everything we can for our military children and families as well as ensuring their academic, emotional, and social success. We do this not only to support their educational and co-curricular growth in their current school year, but to help build their resilience knowing we are not the only school district in their educational path.

Local Transition Resources

Over the last 13 years, the Sparta Area School District (SASD) has made great efforts to improve opportunities and outcomes for students, in part because of three DoDEA grants (Project Bold Shift, Project Preparation, and currently through Project Focus Forward.

All of these grants, with funds provided by the Department of Defense Education Activities, have allowed us to increase access for military-connected students and their peers to STEM-focused project-based learning (PBL) and social-emotional learning (SEL).

Improving access to these evidence-based strategies, along with building the capacity of staff to effectively implement new instructional techniques that support them, is creating students with new pathways to college and career readiness. We are starting year three of Focus Forward, a five-year grant from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) to provide a systems-level solution for addressing social and emotional learning as well as math and science achievement gaps involving military-affiliated students (who account for over 20% of the district’s student population).

Military students face challenges associated with being a member of a military family for which the grant can assist the SASD district in addressing through Focus Forward strategies and resources. The SASD will use internal and external personnel and resources to focus on improvement in the areas of social emotional learning and math and science.

For more information on Focus Forward and our efforts contact Tom Chambers, Grant Program Manager. tchambers@spartan.org

If Nov. 11 falls on a Saturday like it does this year, then the government may designate either Saturday or Friday. The 2024 federal observation date is Monday, Nov. 11, 2023.  Continue reading.
