This upcoming spring, the Sparta Area School District Board of Education will have two vacancies. The seat of Mr. Colin Burns-Gilbert and Ms. Ashley Berendes are up for election on April 2, 2024. Anyone who is an eligible voter residing in our District is eligible to be on the ballot. All interested community members are encouraged to fill out nomination papers which are available at the Maplewood School (900 E. Montgomery). Nomination papers must be returned to Maplewood no later than Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at 5:00 p.m.
Those interested in better understanding the role of a Board of Education member are welcome to attend a workshop that I will be hosting focused on what it means to be a Board of Education member. The workshop will be held on December 18, at 5:15 p.m. in the Meadowview cafetorium; this is prior to the full Board of Education meeting at 6:00 at Meadowview. The presentation will include information about our District, roles and responsibilities of a Board member, the structure of Board meetings, chain of command, policy governance, and other important information; nomination papers will also be available. Current Board members may be in attendance to share their perspective on the process of being an elected official.
